Innovation Category

The Innovation category is included within Green Star SA tools as a way of encouraging, recognising, and rewarding the spread of innovative practices, technologies, designs and processes for building applications that impact upon environmental performance.

The Innovation category also encourages the efforts which demonstrate that sustainable development principles have been incorporated to the wider process of design, construction and performance of buildings, as well as any positive environmental influence brought to bear on the wider geographic area in which the project is located. These efforts are recognised over and above any credit obtained in other categories.Innovation points are awarded at the discretion of the Green Building Council South Africa. Any single initiative will only be awarded to ten projects under the same rating tool before no longer being considered ‘innovative’ and rewarded within this category.

The Innovation registers of innovation points awarded have been drawn up by the Green Building Council South Africa (GBSCA) and are intended for use by project teams, contractors and interested parties for information purposes only. Please note that the initiatives listed in the registers have been awarded innovation points based on the specific circumstances on each project, as well as the manner that these circumstances have been presented to the GBCSA for assessment. The GBCSA in no way guarantees that where initiatives have been awarded in the past, these will be awarded again for future projects. Each innovation submission is reviewed in the context of the specific project and documentation submitted.

TYPE 1: Innovation Category Credits

Introducing Innovation Category Credits.

Innovation Categories are designed to encourage and reward projects that implement innovative solutions that address a wide range of social, economic and environmental sustainability issues. Some Innovation Categories will take the form of new credits, while others will simply identify sustainability issues that additional research and innovation will help to address. The GBCSA have identified two types of Innovation Categories that project teams can target.

The GBCSA will avail 1 x free INN CIR to each project team to encourage the use of this type of INN Category.

Introducing Innovation Category Credits

Additionally under INN-3 Environmental Initiatives this type of Innovation includes any credit from a different tool under which the project is submitting (including LEED, BREEAM, Green Star Australia, any of Green Star SA including SEC credits etc) as long as the credit is not rewarded already under the tool with which the project is submitting; and it is applicable in the context of that tool and building type, and meets the credit criteria and documentation requirements of the particular credit.
