The Race to Zero with the GBCSA Academy Net Zero Training

June 15, 2022

GBCSA Academy’s mission is to enable us to make connections and apply critical skills but most importantly, to provide a platform that promotes participation in activities to overcome environmental challenges within the built environment. We aim to present knowledge and skills that are inclusive, accessible and with the intention to advocate for the green agenda.

According to, The Climate Group, “40% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from buildings and, if left unchecked, they’re set to double by 2050.” It is very clear that implementing renewable energy sources is vital in reducing GHG emissions to ensure a healthy environment where people and planet thrive.

The C40 Cities South Africa Buildings Programme launched in 2018, works with Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, and Tshwane (and recently Ekurhuleni) with the purpose to support their plans in achieving net zero carbon for new buildings. The four C40 cities made commitments in 2018 through the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Declaration to achieve net zero carbon new buildings by 2030 and all buildings by 2050. Achieving a building’s net zero carbon status means reducing energy consumption by using energy-efficient systems and equipment, and then providing the building’s minimal energy needs through renewable energy. With 2030 rapidly approaching, this goal will not be easy to achieve, but it’s not impossible.

The academy offers a Net Zero Accredited Professional Programme that provides a comprehensive and practical overview of the GBCSA’s Net Zero rating tools. The main objective of the training is to equip individuals with the knowledge to guide a project team in the design and certification of a Net Zero registered project for a range of building types and to become a recognised Accredited Professional.

The programme outcomes:

  • Gain an understanding of the importance of aiming for further reduced impacts in the design, construction and operation of green buildings
  • Understand the GBCSA Net Zero rating tool
  • Be recognised as a Net Zero Accredited Professional

The Net Zero Accredited Professional training programme is a resourceful mechanism and opportunity for C40 Cities to advance the Net Zero Carbon New Buildings by 2030 as we continue to confront the climate crisis in South Africa.
