GBCSA Leadership awards

A Closer Look at GBCSA’s Leadership Awards

All about the GBCSA Leadership Awards, which are awarded at GBCSA’s annual Green Building Convention.

Champions of sustainability in the built environment are individuals or organisations that lead by example in promoting environmentally conscious practices and initiatives within the construction and development sectors. At the annual Green Building Convention hosted by the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA), these notable sustainability leaders are recognised and celebrated through our respected leadership awards for their outstanding contributions to the advancement of the green building environment.

The awards serve as a stage to honour and applaud our community of green champions who are driving positive change in the industry through innovative projects, combined efforts, and excellent-quality submissions.

These champions prioritise sustainable design, construction methods, and operational practices to minimize environmental impact, reduce carbon footprint, and enhance overall building performance. By advocating for green building standards, solutions, and strategies, they inspire others in the industry to embrace sustainability as a core value, and drive positive change towards a more sustainable built environment.

Previous award winners have indicated that being acknowledged becomes even more motivating to continue with their sustainability principles and strengthens their commitment to making lasting positive impacts through the buildings that they work with.

The GBCSA’s leadership awards originally focused on acknowledging exceptional work within our Green Star build environment community. The “Established Green Star” category, which honours seasoned green building experts who exemplify sustainability through their work, is a highly sought after accolade each year Looking to the next generation, the “Rising Green Star” category recognises emerging Green Star Accredited Professionals (APs).

In recent years the GBCSA has added another awards category: The “Transforming Tomorrow” awards celebrate projects or leaders who drive the industry forward through innovative design and construction initiatives, as well as sustainable management and operations of their buildings, with differences between new build design or construction and existing buildings performance.

Another newer addition is the “EDGE Residential Leaders” category celebrates the residential developers, EDGE Experts, or EDGE Auditors in their crucial role in resource-efficient housing in South Africa and Africa.

Additionally, the awards have acknowledged Green Star APs who submit high quality documentation in their Round 1 submission, emphasising meticulous attention to technical and administrative details to demonstrate compliance through the “Best Quality Submission” awards. These awards are divided between two categories:

  • Green Star projects involving new build design or construction (e.g., Green Star New Build, Green Star Interiors, Green Star Sustainable Precincts).
  • Existing building projects (using the Green Star Existing Building Performance tool).

GBCSA particularly values this award as it emphasises APs who reduce the overall workload for assessors and the GBCSA team by delivering excellent and high-quality work.

Green Star Accredited Professionals (APs) are also recognised through the “Highest Rated Building” awards, which are also divided into categories for new builds and existing buildings. This accolade is given to projects that achieve the highest number of points in the final Green Star rating. The GBCSA interprets this as a quantitative measure to honour Green Star APs and the developers who undertake considerable initiatives to reach for  6-Star projects that live up to their strapline “World Leadership” and are typically ground-breaking within the industry.

Finally, the “Net Zero submission” award acknowledges projects that exhibit progress and bold initiatives towards achieving ambitious net zero commitments.

Every green building project, regardless of whether it is commended with any of these awards, has worth and is important because they all have the capacity to advance sustainability to a wider audience. The awards, however, shine a spotlight on our industry leaders, aiming to inspire us all to aspire to greater sustainability goals.

Let us strive to reach new heights and push the boundaries of sustainable building practices, paving the way for a greener and more resilient future!
