Meet the Members: In conversation with Jacques Groenewald

November 03, 2021

Jacques Groenewald is the founder and owner of ONE39 Central, he recently answered our questions to give us insight into his work, the environment and what inspires him.

1.   Where do you go for inspiration?

There are quite a few things in which I find my peace and inspiration!  Especially in the current times we find ourselves. For one, my Faith helps to restore the mind, body, and soul, despite everything we face today.  Often, finding ways to help or support someone in need, is most inspiring. A reminder of how we need each other and are all connected beyond our understanding.

2.  What is the best part of your workday?

It must be in the morning! Which is clear, I am indeed a ‘morning-person’ to say the least. By nature, we are creators. It’s an opportune time to create opportunities for the day ahead.

3.  What achievement are you most proud of?

As a founder of a small business, I would have expected myself to be most proud of having taken on such a risk. But 5 years later, I am but humbly proud of just having survived the pandemic and living to talk about it. Having lost my father to cancer during the pandemic, my greatest achievement would be making him proud.

4.  What do you think is the most urgent global environmental challenge facing us?

As the Earth moans and groans, her reaction is clear. Humanity’s behaviour. We are our greatest challenge and as a result, the global impact is growing more evident each day.

5.  What do you feel is the biggest issue in the green building industry that we have to overcome, and any ideas on where to start in tackling it?

Finding common ground. An interesting yet appropriate term for the built environment. With the complexity that business brings, caring for the environment, while remaining true to our purpose, will be a constant challenge within these complexities. I do believe that the GBCSA has recognised this and is set to already overcome. Connecting all involved within the built environment has been proven by the change we see today around us. We believe that we must continue to educate, connect and share in our plight together. Creating these platforms and spaces to do so, allows the opportunity for everyone to ‘tackle’ it.
