Meet the members, in conversation with Bryan Storrier

March 25, 2022

Bryan Storrier is the MD of InfinityFlo Pumps and is passionate about assisting people to meet their sustainability goals. He answered our questions to give us insight into his work, the environment and what inspires him.

1.  Where do you go for inspiration?

I draw my inspiration from nature and from music. Music can have such an incredible influence on my mood, my determination and drive. If I’m feeling down or demotivated, some great music that speaks to me on an emotional level always does the trick.

Nature in itself is an inspiration to me and there’s nothing quite like taking a walk on a beach and doing nothing but watching nature in all its beauty and complexity. That is a huge inspiration to me.

2.  What is the best part of your workday?

The best part of my workday is walking out of, or completing a successful presentation on our product and the pure potential it has for growth. Everyone needs to work, and when you genuinely believe that your product can make a huge difference, and others see it as well, there’s no denying that awesome feeling.

3.  What is the most exciting project/aspect of your work currently?

We are currently working on a few data-centre projects which are really exciting. The installation at Ford Rosslyn was also a great project.

The real excitement is to be pioneering a global Brand with 80 year’s successful history into our market that matches the rest of the equipment supplied in terms of technological advancement.

4.  What achievement are you most proud of?

As with many people, my Family is my pride and joy, but I’m very proud to have established a business that provides a comprehensive solution to building owners and ensures that I help create a sustainable world for my children and their children to grow up in. To be a part of that process is something I’m tremendously proud of.

5.  What do you think is the most urgent global environmental challenge facing us?

We all know and understand that there are issues such as over-consumption and too many single use plastic items etc, and while those are the major challenges, I would say that the most urgent challenge we all have is the education of the masses who continue to add to this problem by continuing to purchase and procure them.

There are too many “ordinary” people on the planet who simply don’t have all the correct information to make better choices, or believe that it’s not their problem or issue, and it’s that mindset which is tremendously dangerous.

6.  What do you feel is the biggest issue in the green building industry that we have to overcome, and any ideas on where to start in tackling it?

I would say that in South Africa our biggest issue would be education on new products that play on the global playing field. In our side of the industry specifically, there is no legislation on using inefficient electric motors or pumps, and this is a major problem in terms of sustainability. Generally, the cheapest product wins, unless otherwise specified on the project, and the ultimate loser is the building owner and tenants. Project Managers tend to stick to a standard specification that has been used for years as opposed to looking into new technology.

In the absence of legislation on efficiency for pumps and motors, belonging to organisations like the Green Building Council and having access to the decision makers in terms of sustainability for those groups of people is an excellent way to educate the end user on what is available to assist them in their sustainability goals.
